Re: Important Reminders for SEED DC Students and Families

Dear SEED Families:

The SEED DC community continues to make academic strides as we move into 2017. Our staff is returning prepared to support all students in developing their unique potential. The information below outlines our priorities to enhance school culture and continue to support the mission of preparing students for college and beyond.

Student Code of Conduct

Scholars should be prepared for learning every day by adhering to behavioral expectations, being in a full SEED uniform, and having all the appropriate items to be successful. At SEED, we use the Boys Town model for teaching appropriate social skills. Each week our scholars have a skill of the week such as waiting your turn, using appropriate language, and complying with reasonable requests. Scholars receive feedback via Kickboard and families are encouraged to check their scholar’s Kickboard account daily. If you need your scholar’s Kickboard account login information, please contact Ms. Holloway at 202-249-7773 or Ms. Pearl at 202-248-3015.

SEED DC has recently collaborated with Restorative DC through OSSE with the goal of incorporating more restorative practices into resolving conflicts and matters of negative student behaviors.  We are working diligently to reduce the numbers of student suspensions by utilizing mediation, structured dialogue, and guided resolution If you have further questions about updates to the Code of Conduct or would like to learn more about restorative practices, please contact the Student Life Dean of Students, Ms. Ochsendorf, at 202-249-1907 or

Dress Code

Per our student handbook, all scholars should be in a full uniform which includes a polo or oxford shirt that bears the SEED DC logo, tan khaki pants, solid black or brown belt, and solid black or brown shoes. High school scholars are permitted to wear a shoe of choice and they are permitted to dress down on Fridays. Students may only wear SEED uniform sweaters, sweatshirts, or jackets, as sold in the school store. They may not wear non-SEED outwear to class or public spaces during the academic day.  The Office of Family and Community Engagement will continue to offer extended hours from 7:30 am - 7:00 pm Monday-Thursday to support families in purchasing uniform items. If you are interested in online ordering, please visit our website under resources for parents.

In order to be successful each day, scholars should have all of their materials to be prepared each day, which includes: book bag, pens/pencils, notebooks/binders, calculator, and a charged chrome book (SEED issued) for instructional purposes. If you are having difficulty obtaining supplies for your child, please contact Mrs. Holman-Jones at or send a text message to 202.329.8961.

Agenda Books

Additionally, each student received an agenda book to record assignments and reminders for each class. Dorm staff uses the agenda book along with a digital teacher-managed log to support the completion of homework. Parents interested in receiving the weekend homework email can contact Ms. Holloway at or202-249-7773 or Ms. Pearl at 202-248-3015 or

 Sunday Evening Check-In

Middle school students check in between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm, and students must be checked in by a parent/guardian.  High school students check in between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm, and may check in at 7 pm if they have a middle school sibling.  The expectation is that all students check in on Sundays to prepare for the week ahead, be present for house meetings, and organize uniforms and school materials for the week.

Parents who are unable to arrive during these times must notify SEED DC staff by emailing or leave a message at(202) 248-7773 ext. 5127.  If a student does not check in on Sunday, the next available check-in time is on Monday morning between 6:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Students must arrive with their belongings and MUST be dressed in proper academic uniform and prepared for the academic day.  Families arriving after 7:30 a.m. must check in at the lobby, not the dorm. Please note regular attendance throughout the year is important for the success of our students. Students in excess of 10, 15, and 20 unexcused days must have an attendance meeting and can be reported to the local child welfare bureau. Parents may also receive an automated attendance phone call on Monday morning if your child is marked absent during first period.

Check-in will resume Wednesday, January 4, 2017, from 6:00 am-7:30 am.  Shuttle service will be available from the Benning Road metro from 6:30am-7:15 am. This holiday season; continue to make education a priority and we want to thank you for your continued support of your children and The SEED School of Washington, D.C.
